
A Canadian built Lancaster X, coded VR-A, on which Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski, the mid-upper gunner, was awarded a VC for bravery in trying to save rear gunner Pat Brophy when the plane was shot down on its thirteenth mission. The light cruiser HMAS Perth, which formed part of the Allied fleet that suffered a disastrous defeat by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the battle of the Java Sea, and the subsequent battle of Sunda Strait, in February 1942. The defeat of the allied navies in these battles led to the Japanese occupation of the entire Dutch East
